Te Paki Sand Dunes

About

If you’re heading to Cape Reinga, make sure to stop at the giant Te Paki Sand Dunes for an experience you won’t forget! These massive golden dunes rise up to 150 metres high and stretch for kilometres, creating a surreal desert-like landscape right by the ocean. Plus, it’s one of the most fun and affordable activities in Northland (free with your own board).

The main attraction here is sandboarding—it’s seriously fun! Grab a board from the rental operator at the base of the dunes (seasonal) and get ready for an adrenaline rush. After a short climb to the top, you’ll launch yourself down the steep slopes at epic speeds. Because the dunes are so big, you can choose from gentle runs or go all-in on the steepest faces for maximum speed.

On top of that, the views from the top are pretty special. You’ll see the Tasman Sea and 90 Mile Beach and the expanse of the dunes themselves. In fact, the climb itself is part of the experience, so take your time to enjoy this natural wonder.

Bring sunglasses because the wind can whip sand around. Also, pack water and sunscreen—the sun here is intense, and there’s zero shade. Meanwhile, don’t worry if you’ve never tried sandboarding before, it’s easy to learn and highly addictive! Not to mention all that hiking back up the dunes will burn a few calories!

Finally, if you’re road-tripping along 90 Mile Beach or heading to Cape Reinga, this is a must-do free adventure in the area. Whether you’re chasing that rush or just want epic photos—you’ll get both!
