Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland

About

If you’re exploring Rotorua and want to experience New Zealand’s geothermal magic, Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is the ultimate stop. This colourful wonderland is packed with bubbling mud pools, steaming vents, and surreal hot springs that look like something from another planet. Plus, it’s one of the most photographed geothermal parks in the country—and for good reason.

The highlight of the park is the Champagne Pool, a massive hot spring with vibrant orange and green edges that will blow your mind. Along the way, you’ll also see the Artist’s Palette, a rainbow-coloured terrace created by mineral deposits. On top of that, the famous Lady Knox Geyser erupts daily at 10:15 am, shooting water up to 20 meters high. So, plan your visit around that if you can.

The walking tracks are well-marked and range from short strolls to longer loops, so you can explore at your own pace. In fact, the main loop takes about 75 minutes, making it easy to fit into your day. Meanwhile, don’t forget your camera—the colours here are unreal and change with the light.

Because this is an active geothermal area, stick to the paths for safety. Also, the smell of sulfur is strong, but that’s all part of the experience! Finally, there’s a café and gift shop on-site, so you can grab a snack or a souvenir before heading off.

If you’re after a unique, otherworldly experience in Rotorua, Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is a must-see.
